The
Organic Opportunity: Small Farms
& Economic Development
DVD 25
minutes, 2008, $20
This DVD tells the story of
Woodbury County, Iowa’s
innovative economic development
campaign centered on the development
of local, organic agriculture.
And it’s not just about
organic food—it is a great
story that demonstrates how
local communities can create
a different food system which
provides its citizens with wonderful
food, makes it possible for
young farmers to remain in the
community and farm, while simultaneously
improving the communities economy.
And Woodbury County in Iowa
did it all without any help
from Washington DC.
"The
Organic Opportunity" explores
Woodbury County's pioneering
program of (1) economic development
tax rebates for farmers who
transition to organic, (2) county
purchasing that prioritizes
local, organic food, and (3)
financing for new, small farmers
committed to organic agriculture.
It is a story of hope and practical
steps any community can take
to build a thriving local economy.

PERMACULTURE:
A QUIET REVOLUTION DVD (27
min), 2008, $20
This
new documentary by Vanessa Schultz
features leading permaculturists
including the WATER
Institute's Brock Dolman
.
The
documentary of IPC8 is now available
on DVD! PERMACULTURE: A QUIET
REVOLUTION (27 min). As corporate
media fails to provide accurate
news of the world's dire environmental
predicament, the Earth sends
a clear message in the form
of record-breaking natural disasters,
famine and epidemics. People
are mobilizing for what lies
ahead. In May 2007, the 8th
International Permaculture Convergence
(IPC8) was held in Brazil, bringing
together visionary activists
from 43 countries in the common
goal of preparing for, and mitigating,
our looming global crisis. Their
strategy: Self-reliance and
sustainability through permaculture.
This
timely documentary offers practical
steps on how to 'permaculturize'
our lives. It invites viewers
into a permaculture community
that spans the globe. Most importantly,
it gives the critical inspiration
needed to turn our backs on that
which is failing us, and to create
a sustainable future of our own
making.

Natural Controls for Noxious Weeds Written
& directed by Lauren Swain,
produced by Central Rocky Mountain
Permaculture Institute, 33 minutes,
2002, $15, DVD
Controlling
noxious weeds has been a contentious
issue on the Front Range and throughout
the Rocky Mountain West. Many
people are concerned about the
hazards of herbicide use, yet
this is now the primary method
employed to control the many invasive
weeds that now threaten our region's
native environment. We suggest
a new approach, oriented towards
reducing the use of toxins, yet
achieving excellent results with
the use of other methods.
Millions
of public dollars are spent on
the chemical control of weeds
in Colorado each year. We demonstrate
that these budgets could be reduced,
and more lasting solutions developed.
This
video describes the noxious weed
problem and explains the benefits
of using non-chemical control
methods. Several successful Biocontrol,
manual control, and land reclamation
programs are presented. The problem
of invasive ornamentals is explored,
and the political aspect of herbicide
reduction is discussed.

The
Power of Community: How Cuba Survived
Peak Oil 53 minutes,
DVD or VHS, 2006, $20
The
need to bring agriculture into
Havana began with the fall of
the Soviet Union and the loss
of more than 50 percent of Cuba's
oil imports, much of its food
and 85 percent of its trade
economy. Transportation halted,
people went hungry and the average
Cuban lost 30 pounds.
Due
to the continuing US embargo,
but also because of the loss
of a foreign market, Cuba couldn't
obtain enough imported food.
Furthermore, without a substitute
for fossil-fuel based large-scale
farming, agricultural production
dropped drastically.
So
Cubans started to grow local
organic produce out of necessity,
developed bio-pesticides and
bio-fertilizers as petrochemical
substitutes, and incorporated
more fruits and vegetables into
their diets. Since they couldn't
fuel their aging cars, they
walked, biked, rode buses, and
carpooled.
The
goals of this film are to give
hope to the developed world as
it wakes up to the consequences
of being hooked on oil, and to
lift American's prejudice of Cuba
by showing the Cuban people as
they are. The filmmakers do this
by having the people tell their
story on film. It's a story of
their dedication to independence
and triumph over adversity, and
a story of cooperation and hope.
