began its activities in
South America with its first
projects in Ecuador in 1989.
In the Andes a bilingual
education school was created
in Cayambe and on the coast
in San Lorenzo a series
of community programs were
developed around the nucleus
of a permaculture farm model
which has since become a
regionally important seed
bank. In the Amazon work
with the Huaorani has been
the subject of a prize winning
book and numerous articles
in magazines such as the
New Yorker. Our students
have been the recipients
of the Rolex Award and numerous
Community Service awards.

PAL began working with the
Shipibo in early 1995 in
the Ucayali region of the
Peruvian Amazon. A village
development program resulted
in the construction of five
wells, a womens sewing and
kitchen cooperative and
an agroforestry system.
Working with indigenous
fishermen we pioneered the
development of the Shipibo
aquaculture model.

The

as an independent organization
in 2002 by small farmers
concerned to halt the destruction
of their environment and

6 years, we have built a

of which is the ecological

Our aim is to train community

Our work in Guatemala began
in 1995, in and around San

support led to a profitable
fair trade program for 300
indigenous organic coffee

achievement, numerous other
small cooperative projects
were initiated, among them
work with orphaned children
and local women. Our rapidly
growing mission led to the
formation of the Institute
of MesoAmerican Permaculture

parcel of land was purchased
on the shores of Lake Atitlan,
becoming the new, permaculture
reference center.

Caribbean
Bahamas
Cape
Eleuthera Institute
Natural resources have been
the foundation of economic
development in The Bahamas
for hundreds of years. In
the 19th and early 20th
century, agriculture prospered,
especially on islands such
as Eleuthera, because of
a favorable climate and
red lateritic soils that
allowed large-scale production
of crops such as pineapple,
vegetables, and grains.
In fact, the island of Eleuthera
was a major supplier of
pineapple to the United
States until Hawaii became
a U.S. territory in 1900.
Unfortunately, changes in
market demand, in combination
with intensive growing practices
reducing the land’s
ability to sustain agriculture
at a commercial scale, eventually
relegated agriculture to
small-scale operations that
only support local demands
and subsistence living.
These trends in production
have resulted in a large
percentage of the food available
in The Bahamas being imported
from other countries, which
has increased food prices
and influenced diets. Moreover,
even small-scale agriculture
is dependent upon chemical
fertilizers and pesticides
that are costly and have
significant environmental
and human health risks.
